The Decision

If you're reading this post it's probably because you fall into one of two categories: (1) You're curious because (a) you think we're nuts for deciding to homeschool (b) You've thought about homeschooling your own kids and you'd like to know more about it or (c) You currently are a homeschooler (2) You love us to pieces and you'd really like to see us succeed at this! Whatever the case may be, I'm glad you decided to stop by our blog today and hang out with us.

Regardless of political affiliation, religious views, or culture, I think one thing most parents would agree on is the desire for our children to receive a great education. Perhaps one thing we all disagree on is the very definition of a great education. For example, a perfect fit for your family may be sending your kids to private school while another family feels public education is the route to go. Then there are families like ours who choose to homeschool. Some might prefer one mode of education over another but simply do not have the resources to do so. Basically what it comes down to is choice and doing the best we can with what we have been given.

Homeschooling was a HUGE decision for us, one with much discussion and prayer poured into it over the past two and a half years. Our oldest son has experienced both public and private schools and neither of them were are fit for him. The missing link? Faith based education. So, do I think public schools are evil, government controlled intities? Absolutely not! I used to be a high school journalism teacher and many of my colleagues were well-educated, dedicated, and compassionate people. Do private schools provide the best education? Not necessarily! But private schools are one great way for kids to get a faith based education. Is homeschooling an incredible way to educate, nurture, and equip young minds? For us, for now, yes! But it might not be a right fit for you.

There are a plethora of educational opportunities in this fine land. Options overfloweth and the mode in which to educate our children boils down to choice, accessibility and ability. For us, at this moment in our lives, it's homeschooling. For you it may be public school, private school, or a magnet school. Whatever the case, I do hope the best for you this school year. Come back and visit us often, as this blog will serve as a journal of our daily lives as a homeschool family. Perhaps some of the ups and downs we face at home will parallel events happening on your own educational journey.
